Online Safety for Kids & Teens: A Parent’s Guide

By Saved in America

Most grooming begins online. With social media, gaming chats, and messaging apps, predators can reach children more easily than ever before and often without parents noticing.

Saved in America has investigated hundreds of cases that began with a single message.

Here’s what every parent needs to know.

Where Grooming Happens Most

According to NCMEC:

“Online enticement can occur on any platform where children interact.”

This includes:

  • Instagram & TikTok

  • Snapchat

  • Discord

  • Gaming chats (Roblox, Fortnite, etc.)

Common Grooming Tactics

SIA investigative history shows predators use:

  • Flattery (“You’re mature for your age”)

  • Gifts / money

  • Fake opportunities (modeling, brand deals)

  • Emotional bonding

  • Secret keeping (“Don’t tell your parents”)

These tactics escalate quickly into exploitation.

How Parents Can Protect Their Children

1. Keep open communication

Ask about new online friends and platforms. Kids are safer when they feel safe talking to you.

2. Monitor privacy settings

Make accounts private. Disable location sharing. Review friend lists regularly.

3. Establish device boundaries

No phones in bedrooms overnight.
Check in daily during high activity times.
