Language Matters

Why Language Matters When Talking About Survivors

The words we use shape how survivors see themselves.

Terms like “victim” can sometimes reinforce powerlessness.

Many prefer “survivor” because it reflects strength and resilience.

Even small language shifts can:

  • Restore dignity

  • Encourage healing

  • Reduce stigma

Respect starts with how we speak. Listen to how this parent advocate talks in this recent video from our youtube.
