“Just Leave”

One of the most common and harmful misconceptions surrounding trafficking is the question:
“Why didn’t they just leave?”

The reality is that leaving is rarely simple or safe.

Survivors are often emotionally bonded to their trafficker through trauma bonding, fear, manipulation, or dependency. Many are convinced that law enforcement won’t help them, that their family won’t believe them, or that escape will result in harm to themselves or others they love.

Traffickers intentionally break down identity and self-worth, replacing it with fear and obligation. Over time, victims may not even recognize themselves as victims.

Understanding this reality shifts the conversation from judgment to compassion. Survivors don’t need blame they need support, patience, and resources.

Saved in America works alongside families and law enforcement to help bridge that gap, ensuring survivors are met with understanding rather than shame.
