How Traffickers Recruit: What Every Parent Should Know

Traffickers rarely begin with force. They begin with grooming.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation warns that traffickers increasingly use social media platforms, gaming apps, and messaging services to recruit minors (FBI, “Human Trafficking and Online Recruitment”).

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security explains that traffickers build trust by posing as romantic partners, modeling agents, or friends offering financial support before gradually isolating and manipulating victims (DHS Blue Campaign, “Indicators of Human Trafficking”).

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has also reported a dramatic rise in online enticement cases involving minors over the past several years (NCMEC CyberTipline Reports).

Warning signs may include sudden secrecy about online behavior, unexplained gifts, withdrawal from family, or relationships with significantly older individuals.

Prevention begins with connection, education, and open communication.
