A Borderless Crime

One of the biggest misconceptions about human trafficking is that it only happens “somewhere else.” Another country. Another city. Another type of community.

The truth is much more uncomfortable: child trafficking is borderless.

Traffickers do not need international borders to exploit children. In fact, many cases involve children trafficked within their own towns, counties, or states. Social media, gaming platforms, and everyday locations like malls, schools, and parks have replaced the outdated image of dark alleyways and foreign smuggling routes.

This misconception creates dangerous blind spots. When communities believe trafficking is rare or far away, warning signs are missed. Parents don’t ask the right questions. Schools don’t train staff properly. Law enforcement resources aren’t prioritized.

Saved in America has seen firsthand that trafficking thrives where awareness is low and assumptions are high. The reality is simple: if there are children, there is risk. Awareness isn’t fear based it’s protection based.

The fight against trafficking starts by understanding that this crime doesn’t need a border to exist.
